DTG printing, or direct-to-garment printing, is a printing process for garments where the impression is printed directly onto the garment. This is similar to screen printing in it’s durability and longevity, however, there are key differences in the process. Direct-to-garment printing is a production-level, professional printing technique that is used in any instance where a full color range is necessary. DTG can produce photograph-like results on a garment and is permanent, unlike transfers (direct-to-film or otherwise) or vinyl designs cut with a Cricut.
How is DTG different than screen printing?
Screen printing is a tried-and-true printing method that is both professional and high-quality, however, it does have limitations. Most screen printers charge you by the color, because a screen must be produced for each color in the design. In addition to this, depending on the shop, this will limit you to somewhere between 4 and 8 colors, at most. Plus, there are just plain some designs that can’t be achieved via screen printing. When you combine that with setup fees for screens, splitting your art into individual colors, paying for each color, etc, it becomes a nightmare and too much to hope to make a profit from when you are selling your stuff or too much to deal with if you just want a couple shirts. And let’s not forget having minimum orders. That prevents you from having flexibility in your inventory and inhibits trying things out. DTG printing has no setup fees, no screen prep, no minimums, no color limits, no breaking your art down, can provide higher levels of detail than screen printing (we’ve seen it in our own illustrations), and can flat out produce art that would otherwise suffer via other printing methods. We’ve found it to be the best all-around answer for producing high-quality items flexibly and at minimal cost.
That all sounds great. What’s next?
If you are interested in our services, you can reach out to DARKSIDE DTG here. From there, we’ll probably have a few questions for you to narrow things down such as if you have artwork already, a type of shirt in mind, how many you need, when you need them by, etc. Every project is unique and working out the details with you up front will infinitely aid the process. Once the details are hashed out, we will send you mockups along with a quote for the job. We ask for payment up front to produce the items once everything is agreed upon and approved by you. From there, we make your items and you have some awesome t-shirts/sweatshirts/hoodies/etc.
